You know, as someone who has tried to write stories of their own, it is really hard to do slow-burn stories. Maintaining a slower pace while still ensuring progress and providing the audience with occasional big moments is difficult. This is especially true for romance because how do you show a relationship growing without rushing through the big moments? That’s why today we are talking about why The Angel Next Door deserved a better anime adaptation.

So welcome back to another article. Today I will be talking about how The Angel Next Door LN handles a slow-burn romance very well while the anime adaptation kinda rushed through it lol. So let’s get started.

How did the Anime ruin The Angel Next Door LN?

First of all, slow-burn does not mean a lack of progress. A slow-burn style works well with settings like The Angel Next Door because when the series starts, the MCs are basically strangers. Over the course of the story, you feel the passage of time and get a good sense of just how much time Mahiru and Amane have spent together and how long the tension between them has been escalating for. So when we finally get that long-awaited confession scene at the of Volume 4, it feels earned, it feels cathartic and that is awesome.

Those feelings right there signify that the slow-burn was well done. Sure, it took some time but the pay-off was worth it. And I wish that the anime adaptation maintained this pacing too. Generally, for a well-paced adaptation, studios only do 3 volumes per 12 /13 episodes. But despite following the LN well for the first half of the anime, Project No. 9 decided to cram 4 volumes into 12 episodes and as a result, the last few episodes felt incredibly rushed.

The cautious pacing the show had built up till that point completely gone in the span of just a few episodes. The pacing change was so bad that Mahiru started acting like a Yandere for a moment near the end in the anime lol. Season 2 of the anime is coming soon and I really hope that Season 2 doesn’t just rush through the LN. I wish they just added a few more episodes to Season 1 instead of rushing through it.
