Uzumaki Novelization Concludes After Seven Years

Uzumaki Novelization Ends

The novelization of Junji Ito’s iconic horror manga Uzumaki has reached its conclusion. Masaru Satō’s adaptation finished its run in the July issue of Shogakukan’s Big Comic Original Zōkan magazine on June 12, 2026.

Satō launched the novelization back in February 2019. Over the past seven years, fans have followed his prose take on the eerie town plagued by strange spiral phenomena, originally depicted in Ito’s manga from 1998 to 1999.

The manga tells the unsettling story of a small town’s residents who encounter bizarre events tied to a mysterious spiral shape. This haunting narrative has inspired much beyond the manga, including a live-action horror film released in 2000.

In recent years, Uzumaki gained renewed attention with its anime adaptation, which premiered on Adult Swim’s Toonami block in September 2024 and wrapped up the following month. The anime has been accessible internationally on platforms like Amazon, Google Play, and Max.

Masaru Satō, who is a former senior analyst at Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has shared his admiration for Junji Ito’s work. His journey with Uzumaki began after spotting someone reading the original manga on a train. This novelization marks Satō’s first work as a novelist, showing his passion for Ito’s horror universe.

For those who want to experience the entire story in novel form, the complete volume of Satō’s Uzumaki adaptation is set to be compiled and shipped at a later date.

The enduring eerie vibe of Uzumaki continues to captivate fans, and Satō’s novelization has added a fresh layer to this cult classic. Fans of Junji Ito’s spiral nightmare now have another way to experience this chilling tale.
