Fragrant Flower Episode 6 was HEAVY!

Man, it has been a while since I was THIS invested in a romance anime. Sure, I love romance shows; that is not a secret. But it has been a while since I found something that has resonated this much with me. The last one was Horimiya, which was a few years ago. Fragrant Flower Episode 6 was the perfect encapsulation of what makes this anime so good. Hey, as a socially anxious person who often overthinks, I FELT this episode, bro. I really did.
So welcome back to another mid-season review. Today, we are talking about The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity Episode 6. I am aware that Western folks have not gotten this episode yet, thanks to Netflix. So here’s a spoiler warning for everyone. Continue only if you have watched Episode 6. With that said, let’s get started.
What did I think of Fragrant Flower Episode 6?
Before I talk about the contents of the episode, I want to talk about the presentation in this episode. Most of this episode was just a singular, long conversation between Subaru and Kaoruko. This episode could have easily been a boring mess. But nope, CloverWorks was so creative with their visuals and shot framing this week that even this long conversation never felt “boring”. They even managed to include the flashback parts in interesting ways. 10/10 for presentation this week.
Moving on to Subaru and Kaoruko, I really like how natural their relationship feels. If you have ONE friend growing up who stood up against bullies and helped your insecurities ever since you were young, of course, you’d care for them. Subaru doesn’t hate Rintarou; in fact, she finds out pretty quickly just how kind he is, but she cares for Kaoruko so much that she’d STILL do anything to protect her and her reputation. But again, she accepts she was being selfish and backs down after hearing what Kaoruko and Rintarou had to say.
I can imagine why Subaru hates herself at this point. I also love how Rintarou couldn’t believe his ears for a second when she asked to be his friend lol. I hope they continue showing her character growth because she is SUCH a well-written character. Oh, and speaking of Kaoruko, girl straight-up accepted that she loves Rintarou. Not likes, loves. Y’all don’t understand how rare a straightforward acceptance like this is in a romance anime. Absolute Cinema. Would blush like a damn teenager with a stupid smile on my face again.
I swear to god, I will get diabetes from this show.
