How Good is GGO Season 2 so far?

Article at a glance:

  • Season 2 of GGO is lighter on plot, focusing entirely on a high-stakes Squad Jam with new, intense rules that keep things fresh and balanced.
  • The action has been refined with a tactical edge, even if the writing and character development aren’t quite as strong as in Season 1.
  • Despite preferring Season 1’s art style, the animation quality here is improved, and the unpredictable twists make for a solid 7/10 so far.

Honestly, GGO Season 2 has been great so far. Yes, there are a few issues I do have with it, but none of them take away from how fun it has been. I am so glad that I decided to check out SAO Alternative GGO when I did. If you are looking for great firearms-based action with a bit of tactical touch, you just can’t go wrong with GGO in general, I think. Season 2 so far has just solidified that sentiment of mine. I won’t pretend that it’s the deepest thing out there but it is just a lot of fun and I don’t mind that at all.

Welcome to another mid-season review and today we are talking about SAO Alternative GGO Season 2! Episode 6 dropped earlier today so I think this is the best time to catch up. There isn’t much to spoil but still, a spoiler warning is in effect now. So let’s get started.

What do I think of GGO Season 2 so far?

Right off the bat, Season 2 is not as plot-heavy as Season 1. There’s basically no over-arching plot for this season so far, all of it has been a single game of Squad Jam so far. The reason I don’t mind that is because of just how many twists this Squad Jam has been throwing our way. The new rules introduced for this Squad Jam make it a lot more intense and engaging. And the rule changes make sense in the context of the story too as the devs saw the previous two Squad Jams and made balance changes accordingly.

I do wish to see a bit more character development in this season though. Last season had a bunch of character development for LLENN towards the end and I hope that continues. I do appreciate that we get to see new character dynamics because of the new rules. So I am looking forward to seeing how this Squad Jam concludes after all these twists and turns. And speaking of issues I have with Season 2, I really do miss the art style of Season 1. The animation quality is better overall but I did like the Season 1 art style more. Again, that’s just personal preference.

I do think that the overall writing quality has taken a dip but Season 2 is still incredibly fun. The action feels more refined, there’s more tactical stuff now to keep up with the new rules and again, the new rules really ensure that the game stays fresh and engaging. Turning Pitou and a bunch of others into a whole separate team was a great idea and I am curious to see where it goes. Because of this and a few other curves, the ending of this Squad Jam is kinda unpredictable and I appreciate that.

That is all for now

So yeah, those were my thoughts on GGO Season 2 so far. The writing is a little worse than Season 1 but I think the action makes up for it. I’d rate it a solid 7/10 right now. Let me know what you guys think in the comments. I will take my leave here. See ya!
