New Ghost in the Shell Anime Announced!

Article at a glance:

  • Toho and Bandai Namco announced a new episodic anime adaptation of Ghost in the Shell by Science SARU, set for release in early 2026.
  • The project is a collaboration between Science SARU, Bandai Namco Filmworks, and Production IG, revealed during the 35th anniversary event of the manga.
  • A teaser trailer and visual were released, indicating the anime will reboot the original manga’s storyline.

So Toho recently acquired a studio called Science SARU. It is a relatively new studio and the biggest project they’ve worked on is Devilman Crybaby. They also contributed to Star Wars Visions along with a bunch of other studios. But that’s about it. Science SARU hasn’t really done a big project outside of those two things. So when Toho acquired them recently, we knew they’d give certain projects to them. HOLY SHIT I did not expect them to drop a huge IP like Ghost in the Shell on them.

I hope Toho knows what they are doing given how well the original two movies of the series are regarded. Innocense deserves more respect in my opinion but that is a topic for another day. So well, Toho and Bandai Namco dropped this massive bombshell on us out of nowhere so let’s talk about it. I still can’t believe it. So welcome back to another news article, today we are talking about Ghost in the Shell. Let’s get into it.

What do we know about the new Ghost in the Shell anime?

Well, the first major difference is that this will actually be an anime. So it will be released in an episodic format weekly. While the original adaptation that is now iconic was a movie. Bandai Namco Filmworks had an event commemorating the 35th anniversary of the manga’s serialization, that is where this news comes from. Of course, this anime project will be made by Science SARU along with Bandai Namco Filmworks and Production IG. We got a teaser visual and a teaser trailer for it. Surprising, considering we generally get nothing with initial announcements.

You can check out the teaser trailer here. By the looks of it, they are adapting the manga again from the start. So this anime is kind of a reboot of the original movie. We also have a release window of 2026. I’d imagine this will be sometime early in 2026 cause otherwise they wouldn’t announce it this soon. But I could be wrong on that. But yeah that.

My Thoughts

Well, this announcement certainly is a surprise. We all knew we’d get something for the 35th anniversary but no one expected it to be this. I am pretty sure that this announcement was in the works before the acquisition of Science SARU was announced by Toho. Of course, both the acquisition process and animating a teaser like this take time so it is hard to say which one came first. But I am sure both of these incidents were definitely related.

Now, as someone who adores the original movie, I am very excited about this anime. At the same time, I am very concerned. Ghost in the Shell was a bold movie for its time and I have to wonder if certain things shown in the movie back in the day will fly today or not. We all know how the internet can be. And my other concern is simply that this anime may not be able to live up to the standard set by the old movie. But well, if that happens we can always go watch the old movie again so I guess I shouldn’t be that worried.

That is all for now!

Well, that’s all I have to say, let me know what you guys think in the comments. I will take my leave here. I have to go mod Skyrim. See ya!
