Wind Breaker Season 2 Review

Article at a glance:

  • Wind Breaker Season 2 takes a step back from nonstop action to dive deeper into its characters and core theme of acceptance — a shift that might split the fanbase.
  • While the plot is still pretty light, the character work this season adds emotional depth, even if it means fewer fight scenes.
  • Whether you loved or hated this season, there’s no denying that it changes the pace — and that makes reviewing it a bit tricky.
Wind Breaker Season 2 Review

This season of Wind Breaker was certainly an odd one. I wonder how the overall community will look back at this season considering the type of audience Wind Breaker built up throughout Season 1 because of how cool the action was. Because in Season 2, the show chose to tone down the action a little to focus more on the characters and the core theme of the show: “acceptance”. This also makes Wind Breaker Season 2 a complicated season 2 to review because people will feel about it way too strongly on one side or the other.

I will do my best to keep things objective but in matters like this, bias is hard to avoid. Your opinion on this anime is equally as valid as mine, just keep things civil. If you didn’t like this season and dropped it, that’s fine; if you liked this season and thought it was great, that’s fine too.

So yeah, with all that out of the way, let’s finally begin my review for Wind Breaker Season 2. Well, Season 2 Part 1 I guess since I’m pretty sure, much like Season 1, Season 2 will have 2 cours. But yeah, let’s get started.

Wind Breaker Season 2 Review

Plot

Well, since this is Wind Breaker, there isn’t much plot to talk about. There is more plot than Season 1 here and Season 2 has started building up a “big bad” behind the scenes, there still isn’t much plot here to talk about. You know it, I know it, Wind Breaker isn’t really about the plot. It is about the characters, the fights, and the feels. The plot serves its purpose of getting us through more character moments and awesome fight scenes. Speaking of, I really wish there were more fight scenes in this season. Wind Breaker fights are way too much fun.

Though what I suspect will end up happening with Season 2 is that the remaining 2 episodes of Part 1 will set up something and Part 2 of Season 2 will be all about dealing with all that. But we will see how things go.

Characters

Yeah this is where this Wind Breaker Season 2 review will get divisive lol

Tsubaki

Look, not gonna lie, I like Tsubaki as a character. Yeah, I know a lot of people have a lot of different opinions about his character but come on man, femboys are not a new thing in anime. Either way, Tsubaki is surprisingly mature and while yeah, I do find some traits of his character a bit over the top, I do appreciate how perceptive Tsubaki is of others. I feel like he is one of the best characters to pair Sakura with to bring Sakura out of his shell and open up a bit.

And yeah, to that end, we do see Sakura get a bit more honest throughout the course of this season. But even putting that aside, I think Tsubaki is overall a well-written character and embodies Wind Breaker’s overall theme of acceptance quite well. Whether you like him or not, is up to you.

Sakura

Unlike Season 1, we see a more vulnerable side of Sakura throughout Season 2. And while I do appreciate all the character growth he went through, I do miss the badass Sakura a little. Outside of the first few episodes, Season 2 doesn’t give Sakura much time to shine and I think that’s a shame. But as I said, it is nice seeing Sakura start to accept others and learn what it means to have connections. This is the first time in his life that he has people he cares about, after all.

I know that Sakura’s transition can feel a bit jarring at times and in certain scenes, I feel the same way too. I wish they took a little more time with character development but I do think this was the natural route to take his character through. You know, someone who has been an outcast his whole life finally finding a place to belong. Again, this goes with the whole theme of acceptance.

The Others

I thought Nire was pretty good throughout this Season. He saw what Sakura had to go through and how much it bothered him to see his friends get hurt and decided to start training. And I am glad that he doesn’t get into a big fight or something, he just gets small moments here and there to show his newly learned skills. I am glad that he picked Suou to help him too since Suou’s style doesn’t rely on physical strength at all.

While KEEL made for compelling antagonists for the first arc of the Season, Suzuri is just not that good. He never feels threatening and despite getting a heartfelt backstory, I think he turns over too quick. He does not feel like a big deal at all compared to KEEL or Shishitoren from Season 1. Now, Endou on the other hand, has potential. Just his design alone is so cool and I cannot wait to see more of him.

Animations and Soundtracks

I think this part will remain unchanged compared to my Wind Breaker Season 1 review because Season 2 still has awesome animations and soundtracks. Again, my only major complaint is that I wish we got more fights in Season 2. Wind Breaker has such awesome art and fight choreography that I really do miss the intense action of Season 1. But yeah, CloverWorks once again does a fantastic job with Wind Breaker and you will not be disappointed with the production quality, that is for sure.

Summing Up

Here are my final review scores for Wind Breaker Season 2:

  • Plot – 6/10
  • Characters – 8/10
  • Animations – 8/10
  • Soundtracks – 8/10
  • Enjoyment – 8/10
  • Overall – 7.6/10

But yeah, those were my thoughts on Wind Breaker Season 2. Let me know what you guys think in the comments. I will take my leave here. Had a long day at work, and I really need some sleep. See ya!
