Summertime Rendering, Anime Recommendation of the Week!

Key points for Anime Recommendation – Summertime Render:

  • Summertime Rendering seamlessly blends elements of murder mystery, supernatural, and time-loop genres, offering a unique and engaging storyline.
  • The anime excels in character development, crafting a small but well-written cast with interconnected backstories, making viewers emotionally invested in each character.
  • With a concise 25-episode format, Summertime Rendering delivers a complete and satisfying narrative, avoiding unnecessary prolongation and maintaining a captivating pace.

This was low-key one of the best anime of 2022. Mind you, 2022 had a lot of amazing anime, in general. I did cover this anime back when it was airing as well. But honestly, I don’t even remember what I said about it back then. And I don’t even want to know what I said about it back then as I don’t want my older thoughts to influence my current thoughts. I wanted to have a fresh look at Summertime Rendering so I rewatched it recently. And that is why I’d like to talk about it today!

So welcome back to another edition of our anime recommendation series! This week we are, of course, taking a look at Summertime Rendering or Summertime Render. Whichever version you prefer. This recommendation series is a good way of approaching animes I have covered in the past with a fresh perspective and that is exactly what we are doing today. So let’s get started!

Summertime Rendering or Summertime Render is based on the manga of the same name by Tanaka Yasunori. The manga ran on Shonen Jump+ from October 2017 to February 2021. It is pretty short, coming in at just 139 chapters compiled into 13 volumes. As for the anime, it is one season of 25 episodes. It came out in the spring season of 2022. It was made by OLM Studios and to my knowledge, it does cover the entirety of the manga.

Ajiro Shinpei used to live with the Kofune family after the death of his parents. Soon though, he left his home island for Tokyo to pursue further studies. He returns to the island years later when he hears that one of the daughters of the Kofune family, Kofune Ushio drowned while saving a little girl. While attending Ushio’s funeral, Shinpei hears some rumors and figures out that her death may not have been an accident. And things just spiral out of control from that point on.

This anime starts off with a “simple” murder mystery but as you’ll soon learn, there are so many things involved. The plot is a great combination of supernatural and time-loop genres. But unlike most time loop anime, Shinpei’s loop abilities are heavily constrained and while convenient, they’re not all-powerful. The explanation of these abilities, the existence of Shadows, how they came to be, etc, is really well-explored adding a lot to the world-building of the series. And on top of that, the plot itself is really interesting and full of twists.

Another area this anime excels in. The anime has a relatively small group of characters but it spends a lot of time developing them. Everyone’s backstories are related and they play a part in the present day events. The anime also does a great job of making you care for each and every character. Even for someone like Haine. Shinpei and Ushio are my favorites but I really can’t fault anyone for having other favorite characters because everyone is so damn well-written. Everyone gets consistent development throughout the anime as well.

Animations and Soundtracks

The art style is kind of different from what we are used to seeing, I don’t mind it but some people may not like it. Please don’t let that deter you from this awesome anime though. The animations are decent as well, they get the job done. The background music for fights and stuff is pretty good as well although the opening and ending themes are fairly average.

Summing up

Here’s why you should watch Summertime Rendering:

  • Amazing plot
  • Great world-building
  • Awesome characters
  • The complete plot is just a single season

That is all for now! Let me know what you guys think in the comments. I will take my leave here. See ya!!
