My Dress-up Darling – First Impressions

So there are not a lot of crazy anime this season, AoT and Demon Slayer are carrying this season hard. My Dress-up Darling is probably the best anime in the new anime section in this season. Now sure this show may not exactly be for everybody but, I really think people should give this a try. If you can look past the fan service, you may just find something very inspirational and respectable.

So My Dress-up Darling or Sono Bisque Doll wa Koi wo Suru is adapted from the manga of the same name. We don’t know for sure how long the anime will be for now but, my guess is it will be 1 cour like normal. I haven’t read the manga, in fact, I didn’t even know about it till I started the anime so these are my honest first impressions. At the time of writing, only 2 episodes are out and I will be talking about them so expect some spoilers ahead.

Plot

My Dress-up Darling is about a Japanese doll artisan, Gojou Wakana who is trying to make a doll like his grandfather made. Because of his weird hobby and a particular incident in his childhood, Wakana is a loner and finds solace in making doll clothes. One day, Kitagawa a girl from his class spots him in the home ec room making doll clothes. Just when Wakana thinks it is all over, Kitagawa reveals that she is into cosplay and asks Wakana to make a particular dress for her.

Pretty standard plot for a romance anime but, here’s the thing romance anime are driven by characters rather than plot. What I personally like about My Dress-up Darling is Wakana’s character development. I will talk more about that in the next section but, it is the main thing that drives the anime forward. If you are into fan service, you have come to the right place man. You will get a lot of fan service in this anime so good for those who like and those who don’t I please request you to look past it for this anime.

Characters

It has only been 2 episodes so it is probably too soon to judge characters but, I personally really like Wakana. It is because of his character development, sure but I am very similar to him in a lot of ways.

You see, a lot of people used to fawn on me because I watched anime. It was a bit more severe here than usual because people in my country are of the mentality that animation is only for kids so it was weird to people that I watched animation even after being a grown-up. Now I can spit on those people’s faces because I earn money from a “weird” hobby. My Dress-up Darling also has a similar driving force so I find Wakana very relatable.

As for Kitagawa, she really reminds me of Zero Two so far but, we will have to see if My Dress-up Darling also gives her some character development or not.

Animations and Soundtracks

Nothing much to say here, the animations are pretty average. Slightly lower than average for this day some might say too but, it’s fine. One thing I will say though is My Dress-up Darling’s animations and art style really remind me of Chihayafuru. Is there some relation between these 2? It is probably just me but still. On the soundtracks side, I really enjoyed the opening theme but that’s about it.

Conclusion

That is it for now. My Dress-up Darling is a great anime. It is definitely not perfect or god-tier but, that’s fine. Not everything needs to be that way so this serves as a great break from all that.
